I have another observation about contestants in general. Even after taking a second look, I don't think his traps are out of balance, particularly when you consider how one must develop the traps to balance against the chest and anterior delts. And just look at Han's upper-quarter. Not only does it round out the presentation of the musculature but it keeps the upper body's kinetic chains strong and efficient. You'll notice Jeung has thick traps too. Take for example his pose in PA-22. But while his lower and mid trapezius form a nice thick V, his upper traps are left, well - wanting. I am not a bodybuilder myself which you obviously are and I do not pretend to know all the finer points of what we are supposed to be looking for. All I only know what I like or don’t like and why. DeleteI will try to answer your question as a non bodybuilder, who simply observes and comments on what he sees. I like a well developed male body and love to look at pictures of muscle studs. It seems to me that bodybuilders go wrong in two important muscle areas in their desire for ever bigger muscles. These are the traps and their thighs in which there are clearly several different muscles coming into play. I particularly dislike overdeveloped traps, for as another contributor has pointed out, the guy finishes up with is head surrounded by a set of traps which together with his arm muscles make him look like one of those fairground animals made by twisting sausage shaped balloons together for kids. I am not alone in finding this look less than flattering. The other problem area us the thighs, which bodybuilders tend to work to excess so that they balloon out from what is usually a very slim waist and again make the guy look as though he has been put together by a fairground balloon bender. Just take a look at PA21 of Itakara. Do you honestly find this guy attractive? I know that the blog creed is for big, bigger biggest, but what about proportion? Does it count for nothing? Thanks to his overdeveloped arms and traps, his head looks as if it has just been plopped into place and seems unrelated to the surrounding body structure. And then, below, is thighs look ridiculous. They balloon out and again look as though they do not really belong to the whole body. In a word this guys looks like a stud who was designed by a committee! I know that is very unkind but that is what I think.
Coming now to Kenny and Han, take a look at Kenny’s two sides poses in PA9 and PA14. He is muscular with a super cock but everything is in proportion. I think PA9 shows Kenny off to perfection- nothing is overdone and he looks really beautiful, but PA14 also shows what a perfect physique Kenny has and this shot really shows how beautifully proportioned Kenny’s legs are, muscular but not overdone. Now take a look at PA8 of Han Hyun. Just look at his over developed upper body, arms and traps. They look as if they have been draped around is torso, and really have nothing to do with it. And then his thighs: I do not know the names of the various muscles which we can see here, but overworking give the impression that those pendant muscles hanging self consciously from his thighs, look as though they were put there by plastic surgery. And finally there is his absurdly overdone cock. Someone else has already commented on this unlikely piece of meat saying something to the effect that Kenny’s massive tool is just imaginable, but Han’s stretches the imagination beyond its breaking point. And I agree – it does. Well Donovan, there you have my views – you can agree or disagree, but you will not budge me from being a Kenny supporter. Their comments have been slapped down somewhat as they do not really meet the big, bigger, biggest test. They have all been mentioned by other contributors, but I would mention again young Greg Stone, whose appearance created quite a deluge of comments. He seems to me to have a perfect young body and certainly a super dick. Then I liked Yan Chen, whose one shot I thought was terrific. But my all time favourite has got to be the shot of the Izarru brothers from Portugal in AS7. I know that these two guys are not super heavy, but just take a look at their proportions – absolutely everything is perfect. DeleteAs a note about the judging: while judges, too, seek balance in the body, there is also a general aesthetic they have to judge. That aesthetic is heavily influenced by male power and dominance. It is triggered by ideas that "might makes right." Being powerful trumps being admirable in judges eyes. As such, the physical symbols of naked bodybuilding skew towards ides of excessive power and might, rather than remarkable achievement. In the game of might, "bigger is better" whether one personally "likes" bigger or not.
But it is NOT that judges favor sheer size blindly over proportions. It is rather that the philosophy here is an idea that, at a given point, a NEW aesthetic is achieved. Excessive masculine size and shape creates a new version of aesthetics – and that version is broken away from the ones people typically know. While the common bodybuilding aesthetics are about balance, the naked bodybuilding aesthetics – being so informed by absolute male power – become symbolized in might and scale.
We wanted to share how this seeming favoritism comes down the pike. Often, yes, there are men who are NOT size behemoths who do well, and we love that you are their fan! But the game is about male dominance, and like it or not the ideas that come along with that are what the competitors are trying to capture in their physique. We may not always agree with the beauty or appeal of those symbols, but it makes you a better fan if you understand how the judges think and favor the beef on stage.
