Roher was once a superstar in the making, but I think has obtained that full title already, even at this young age. ReplyDeleteIt was a different time. There weren't any drugs or scientific supplements, no mega-concerns bankrolling naked BB'ers. All they had was going to the gym every day, taking off their clothes, lifting, and of course stimulation. Just like the ancient Greeks.
But there were apparently some bad-asses back then. Like Solomon Hirsch, nicknamed the "Galloping Galitzianer" because of his gigantic horse cock. Or Pretty Boy Lloyd, who cut short a promising career to join the Navy in World War II. "Swede" Jorgenson was a hick from upstate Michigan who didn't work out in a gym at all, but got jacked by working as a lumberjack and used the gym for stimming only. And who can forget the one bodybuilder who posed in yellowface as "Boi Toi", claiming to be a Chinese martial artist who used secret stimulation techniques practiced in the court of the Manchu emperor.
It was a less advanced, less progressive time, but still people eked out a way to be alpha.
Carter Custis Harrison was an early megaweight who came from aristocratic Virginia planter stock, but he shocked the naked bodybuilding (then called "gentlemen's pure bodybuilding") world in 1935 when he announced that he would become the first professional white megaweight who would be willing to compete against a negro. He made a big speech about how the color of a massive, veiny cock has absolutely no bearing on the manliness of its possessor.
The KKK held a rally outside his mansion to intimidate him, but he teased them ceaselessly from his balcony - fully nude - about their pathetic habit of entirely covering themselves with robes.
the 40's were a bit of a dark time for naked bodybuilding. The stricter morality of the time and the overarching sense of paranoia was not friendly to a truly international sport. The changing public views of the 1960s, combined with advances in stim technology that began the rise of the tumorous walls of dick muscle we see today brought the sport out of the dark. At the same time, both the Russians and the Americans saw the potential in promoting their own man-meat missiles, their intercontinental cock-blast machines. It was around this time we saw the formation of the IFNB, which of course helped end the cold war -- but that's a different story!

Most fans of naked muscle have seen the monstrous dong of Solomon Hirsch and didn't even realize it.
And thanks for reminding of the darker times in the 40's and 50's of "Gentlemen's Muscle Sports," when the non-naked variety came into vogue. It is a testament to the authenticity of this sport as a TRUE REPRESENTATION OF MANHOOD that it survived and could never be extinguished. I
The IFNB technically started in 1934 as the "League Of Sportsmen's Endowment Excellence," and then in 1941 changed to "The League of Muscle Sportsman Display." That League actually appointed the first Mr. Exulted awards, which were the precursor to our current Mr. Alpha. Back then they were given several times a year to encourage the naked sport. This excerpt from their literature on the Mr. Exulted prize:
"This Prize recognizes with exuberant agreement the deference men feel in the honor of the presence of the miraculous Prizeholding Sportsman. His scale and features draw awe and enthusiasm from all of good fortune to bear witness, and his miraculous endowment exclaims all the finest virtues of perfect Manhood to which all good Men strive."
These leagues nearly died in the 1940's, and again changed name to the humbler "Gentlemen's Strength & Endowment Enthusiasts Conference," often shortened to just the "Strength & Endowment Conference". Throughout, there were occasional "Mr. E's," but again, the award was seen as a gesture of excellence, rather than an annual battle for male dominance.
In 1958 the Strength & Endowment Conference was rebuilt as the Conference of Bodybuilding Purists. In 1965, as the CPB's contests grew in local popularity, the Federation of Naked Bodybuilding was created, unifying many local efforts. The Mr. Exulted was discarded and a famous and brief period of experimental names for the top male were tried. In 1956 there was the Mr. Nude Muscle, in 1959 the Mr. Erect, in 1961 the Mr. Muscle Erection and in 1962 the Mr. Top Muscle. That last name stuck, and was adjusted to Mr. Top in 1965, a title which stayed for 6 more years.
In 1971, the International Federation of Naked Bodybuilders was born formally, and has grown steadily ever since. Their first major award changed the Mr. Top to the Mr. Macho in 1971, but in 1972 the first Mr. Alpha was given.
In the 1980's, the shows were smaller and often without much fanfare, but by 1984 we saw the first large-scale event: the 1984 Mr. Alpha, which introduced the first 5-round contest. Multiple-round contests then became the norm at the pro levels, and today's pro-level contests have 4 - 10 rounds of naked muscle flexing and cumming.
The one tradition that has stayed since the League of Endowed Sportsmen's Excellence is the cumming and flexing. Throughout the decades, the need for men to prove their masculine prowess through more than just body and cock display but via their aggressive cum shots continues as an international standard of true masculinity.

I've seen images of the returning vets on the more isolated beaches of SoCal furiously pumping away and providing spectacles of lifts, flexing, and jacks for the stunned, if inarguably smaller crowds than those who were drawn to Muscle Beach in Venice.
And I know the immediate beat-era, baby boom years following the war - 1946 - 1950 - produced legendary naked bodybuilders who were inspired by muscles they saw and admired overseas.
Wasn't there an early post WW II pro, Jon Halsted, whose biceps size, lat sweep, and pecs dwarfed just about any man out there? Seems to me there are a lot of black and white studies on these guys, whose prodigious training and huge cocks set the sport in a new direction. Halsted's cock measured a good 14" in length, which was nearly unheard of back in the day, and he regularly coated the faces and destroyed the fine butts of the smaller men he lifted with. Wish I could find an archived collection of Halsted's flexing and jacking. And I don't know whatever happened to him. Anyone?
And of course, there was the early 1960s, when "enhancements" from covert labs south of the border and from Eastern Europe first became available. That's when the first explosion, as it were, of naked bodybuilders began to really take hold. I know Prague was a hotbed center of such fine supplements....even if it was then behind the Iron Curtain. Officials were only too happy to look the other way when it came to the profitable export of their finely-wrought products. Indeed, to this day, many young male Czechs still enjoy the genetic rebranding of their members into star-gazing proportions as a result of their fathers lifting, training, and supplemental indulgences, whether they lift or not.
Wonder if the great Swede Roher may have any Czech antecedents in his personal history? Maybe. Maybe not. Worth a look.

Of course it was a Czech - Ludvik Baran - who first attempted to popularize naked bodybuilding in the Austrian Empire in the early 1900's. He opened the first naked bodybuilding gym in Vienna, where perhaps one of Otter's ancestors even stimmed! But yes, eastern european bodybuilding did not truly take off until the "Scientific Stimulation" methods employed by the Soviet Bloc after World War II. Who can forget such great Soviet bodybuilders as Tigran Sarkassian or Konstantin "The Bear" Bugayev. And many historians of the sport believe that Hungarian superheavyweight Laszlo Farkas would have dominated the sport for years if he had not been imprisoned after his participation in the 1956 revolution - allegedly he stood fully naked in front of a Soviet tank, daring it to come one step closer to his massive, glistening stimstick!
